Windows 3.1 Dial-Up Instructions

Windows 3.1 does not come with built in dial-up support. We will cover the Trumpet Winsock dialer here as it is the most popular dial-up access software for win 3.1. You can obtain a shareware copy of this software by doing a www.google.com search for Trumpet Winsock (keep in mind this is shareware, you would have to purchase the full version for continued use) . You will need to do this from a computer with internet access. You can copy the software to floppy and install to your 3.1 machine from there. Once you have installed the software follow these steps to get connected to TNS.
NOTE: These instructions may not be exactly the same with all versions of Trumpet Winsock but sould be used as a general guide.
1. Left double click on the Trumpet Winsock icon.

2. If this is the first time you have run Trumpet Winsock the Trumpet Winsock setup screen should pop up. If not go to the file menu and left click on setup. Once in the Trumpet Winsock Setup section do the following. Under the DNS section enter the TNS DNS numbers 216.86.128.6 and 216.86.143.14 ( seperated by a space ). Under Domain suffix enter tns.net. Make sure to select PPP under Driver. Now left click on the Dialer settings button. If you don't see a dialer settings button skip to step four.

3. Once in the Dialer Settings section select the COM port that your modem is on. Select an appropriate baud rate. Select the option for Hardware Handshaking, and VJ header comperssion. The option for Login on start up only should be selected and choose to use Standard SLIP/PPP settings. Left click the OK button.

4. Go to the File menu again and select PPP Options. Make sure Use Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) is not selected. Now back in the Winsock Setup screen, click the OK button. You will be prompted to quit Trumpet Winsock and restart it to have the changes take effect. Ignore this and go to the Dialler menu, then select Modem.

5. You will now be in the Winsock Modem Configuration section. Select the COM port that your modem is on. Select the appropriate baud rate and the appropriate modem type. If your modem is not listed in the modem types, choose Generic 28,800 baud modem. Check the option for Hardware Handshaking and left click OK. You will again be prompted to quit Trumpet Winsock and restart it to have the changes take effect. Ignore this and go to the Dialler menu and choose User.

6. Enter your dial-up access number here. This should have been provided to you by TNS. If you want to disable call waiting, add a dialing prefix of *70 to your phone number. Left click OK.

7. Enter your TNS user name here and then left click OK.

8. Enter your password here and then left click OK.

9. Choose yes or no here depending on your preference, then left click OK.

10. Now quit Trumpet Winsock (go to the File menu and left click Exit).
11. Start Trumpet Winsock by left double-clicking on the Winsock icon. The Login script should execute automatically, and start dialing you into TNS. If Login doesn't execute automatically, go to the Dialer menu and left click Login. Once you are dialed in, you can minimize (not exit or close!) the Winsock window, and use any internet applications you have installed on your machine.
12. To log off the internet open your minimized Winsock window (either left click on the icon representing the minimized Winsock window, or hold down the Alt key and hit Tab until the Trumpet Winsock icon comes to the fore). Go to the Dialler menu, and left click Bye. This should hang up your modem. Quit Winsock (go to File and left click Exit).
That's It!
